NAME: Bacopa Monniera

Also called: Herpestis Monnieria, Thyme leaved Gratiola, Brahmi, Water Hyssop

Bacopa Monniera
DESCRIPTION: Bacopa is a plant of the family Scrophulariaceae and is found growing in swampy areas throughout India.

Bacopa monniera is known in the Ayurvedic tradition of India as Brahmi, and has been used traditionally to treat epilepsy, depression, insomnia, and schizophrenia.

The active ingredients in B. monnieri are substances called bacosides.

FUNCTION: Aids in cognitive functions (memory, focus); combats stress-related mental fatigue.

Bacopa has a variety of actions, including being a nervine (sedative) and cardiac tonic as well as having aperient (laxative) and diuretic properties (from the leaves and stalks).

There are numerous potential roles that Bacopa may play in neurological physiology which may help to explain beneficial effects seen in studies of people on endpoints including memory, learning, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Alzheimer's disease, and anxiety disorder. Among these are a reduction in oxidative stress; inhibitory effects on acetylcholinesterase with concomitant reduction in acetylcholine levels; hepatoprotective effects; choline acetylase activity; reductions of IL1, IL6 and TNF; muscarinic cholinergic receptor binding and calcium influx interference.

DOSAGE: Suggested dosage (as per NYBC's own product) is three capsules (300mg) taken 30 minutes before each meal. Take it on an empty stomach whenever possible, allowing some time before you eat food for it to be absorbed. Alternatively, you may take one capsule 1-3 times daily with meals.
DATA: Several double-blind, placebo-controlled studies have evaluated the potential value of B. monnieri for enhancing mental function - the results are not positive, but far from conclusive.
CAUTIONS: This product may cause drowsiness. If so, consider taking it before bedtime - and of course, don't operate heavy machinery or vehicles if it makes you feel less alert!
While NYBC is generally wary of manufacturer websites, Medicor Labs Corp., makers of the Clarocet brand of biologically-based Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM), seems to have done their homework in their compilation of Bacopa research/studies.

Brigham Women's/Faulkner Hospital's site details the quetionable evidence for B. monnieri.

Bacosides are naturally-occurring chemical compounds found in Bacopin and help to fortify kinase, an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of a proenzyme to an active enzyme via repair of damaged neurons.
