NAME: Theanine

Green Tea plants

L-theanine is the predominant amino acid in green tea and constitutes between 1% and 2% of the dry weight of green tea leaves. L-theanine is considered the main component responsible for the taste of the tea, which in Japanese is called umami.

L-theanine is a derivitave of glutamine.

FUNCTION: Used for promoting relaxation and modulating (improving) mood. Theanine may also enhance learning ability. These effects are perhaps achieved by increasing the level of neurotransmitters such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), serotonin, and dopamine.

Theanine may have usefulness in cancer treatment, specifically, aiding the body's response to chemotherapy - in both the effectiveness of the drug treatments and ameliorating their side effects.

SOURCES: Green tea plant (Camellia sinensis)
DOSAGE: Will vary by product and formula concentration.

Scientists at Oxford University found that L-theanine plays an important role in tea's stimulatory effect on the brain's alpha waves.

Physician Desk Reference's entry on L- theanine features some detailed research results, some of which are outlined here.

CAUTIONS: Do not take if pregnant or lactating.

Do not use with antidepressants (e.g., MAO or SSRI inhibitors) or St. John's wort.

Do not operate heavy machinery or take with alcohol.
